Aurora Borealis / Northern Lights watching

Aurora Borealis Northern LightsThe Aurora Borealis or Northern lights are phenomena of night time sky in northen latitudes (10-20dregrees from north pole. Auroa is the Roman God of the Dawn and Boreas the Greek name for Northern wind. The Solar wind from the sun ejects charged particles towards earh which are directed towards the earth poles by the earths magnetic field. Tne interaction produces adancing display of shimmering andwaving lights in the sky. Most commonly green other colours such as red appear too. The Auroa Austalis ( Southern lights ) appear at the same time and in sequence with their northern counterparts.

The Auroras display is not a nightly regular occcurence and you may have to spend qite a few cold nights looking vainly at the sky. If you are lucky it is the most incredible experience, truly out of ths world. Your best chance to see the lights is to head above the arctic circle, Alaska,Northern Canada and Northern Scandinavia are a good bet. One way is to take a holiday above the arctic circle, avoid the midsummer months as it won't be dark enough at night, winter is dark but really cold and very dark so you wont see anything else. Also the next few years should be a peak for lights as the sun is an active phase which happens every 11 years.

Travel Norways Costline on Hurtigruten and spend days above the arctic circle at sea away from any light pollution.
