Canada Adventure Travel Guide
Canada is one of the largest countries in the world and has vast tracts of unexplored ,uninhabited wilderness. Most Canadains live in the main cities or near the American border.
The central prairies are pretty short on adventurous activty and it is the coastal and northern areas which provide the most opportunity. In the west The Pacific Ocean has numerous water activties such as sea kayaking, whalewatching, zodiac riding and sailing. The Rocky Mountains have glorious hiking, mountineering, canoeing, skiing and whitewater rafting. Whistler/Vancouver are hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics. In the North the lakes, Yukon river and wildlife are superb . In the East around Newfoundland go whalewatching and watch icebergs glide gently by.
Canadian History and Culture
Canada has been populated for around the last 26000 years by native tribs ho originally came from asia. The first Europeans to arrive were the Vikings in 1000AD but it was nt until 1497 when John Cabot explored the west coast for England and Jacques Cartier in 1534 for France.
The French settled the St.Lawrence river extensivley and founded Quebec city and Montreal. The British settled Newfoundland but conflicts with colonies and the French led to the 7 years war. In the war the French had to cede Quebec to the British and lost their lands in Canada. In 1812 the war between the US and Britain was fought in lower canada which gave he country a sence of national identity. Large scale immigration from Britain and Ireland occured and in 1840 the provinces merged into a united Canada. Canadians explored westwards onto Vancouver island and into the Yukon.
The Hudson Bay Company played a key roll in the exploration of Canada and controlled the fur trade in canada for hundreds of years. Much of the exploration was carried out by large canoes called voyageurs. Both French and British crews would paddle the extensive network of lakes nad rivers to catch beaver and bring the pelts back to sell.
Canadian culture is rich mix of British,French and the original tribes, America is also a big influence and during the war of independence 46 000 British loyal people came to Canada. On the west coast there is a large Chinese community one of the largest outside Chinese. Tribal cultures are more nutured in canada than in the US.
American and Canadian cultures are intertwined with a common language and similar accent. But call a Canadian he is American!
The Province of Quebec is very proud of its French heritage and has even toyed with independence.Quebec city is a little bit of France in North America.
Canadas national sports are lacrosse and ice hockey. We probably have come across Canadian entertainers without realising Bryan Adams, Pamela Anderson,Dan Akroyd,Michael J Fox,Donald Sutherland,Kim Cattral,Shania Twane,Nelly Furtado,Avril Lavigne and Celine Dionne.
