Organised trips or programmes provide a safe and sociable way to travel if you are going it alone.Many adventure travel companies don't charge extra for a single traveller. As long as you don,t mind sharing a tent or a room its the same price. More upmarket trips may charge a bit extra just like any other holiday. You can get a round the world ticket and join trips with like minded travellers in each place you visit you may even hook up with a new travelling partner.
If you are travelling with friends investigate the areas you will be travelling to and make sure you have common goals on how you want to conduct your trip ie a buddy system for getting back to your digs safely.
Generally the main tourist areas of most destinations are pretty safe during the day but may not be quite so at night so use your common sense. Try not to dangle every gizmo ang gadget round your neck as it will just attract attention. Dress approprately for the local culture. Get a map and plot your route if you feel vunerable you can always dive into a shop to check the way. Try not to walk along holding it like a sail- keep it small and walk like you know exactly were you are going.
If you have a few beers keep an eye on your drink .
