High Atlas Trek: Morocco
Trekking the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco is a great alternative to a long Himalayan flight. The Atlas Mountains stretch through Tunisia,Algeria and Morocco and form a barrier between the Sahara and the Mediterranean.Only a short flight from Europe but a world away from the tourism develpment of the Alps. Morocco provides a cutural contrast to Europe as you are plunged into the Islamic world of Northern Africa. The Medinas of Fez and Marrakesch are a great place to soak this up and don't forget Casablanca.
The Atlas Mountains of Morrocco provide a wild trekking experience on Europes door step. Peaks are linked by shepherds trails and you can forget the mobile signal and the gluhwein.Forests of Cedar,Jumiper and alpine meadows contrats with barren rock,snow and ice. Even though this is North Africa it can be very wet through the winter months, but April to November is drier.
The Atlas consist of 4 ranges from South to North the Anti-Atlas,High Atlas,Mid-Atlas and the Rif Mountains. Jebel Toukal North Africas Highest Peak (4167m) lies in the High Atlas and is a popular summit to climb. Some treks offer mule portage leaving you to carry a day pack. 6 hours trekking with a leisurely lunch is the norm followed by a camp and meal of tangine and couscous.
The classic trek involves the ascent of Jebel Toukal on a five day trek. Most treks start oit from Marrakech. Satrting in the western foothills you 'll wind you way through almond groves.Up to the Tizi Aguelzim pass at 3104m and onto the refuge at 3207m. An early start and 3 hours of climbing later you will summit North Africas tallest peak.a long descent follows past classic mountain scenery before a comfortale night in a proper bed.
Maps outside Morocco are difficult to find , trekkers usually hire a guide who knows all the local routes and trails.
