Culture and History
Pre-colomban history saw advanced civilisations such as the Olmecs,Toltecs,Teotihuacan,Maya and Aztec flourish and develop highly technical levels of construction,science and astronomy. However the Spanish arrived in 1521 and conquered,plundered and eradicated the remaining cultures. Many tribes were decimated by European disease. In 1821 Mexico gained independence from Spain and after further strife became democratic in 1910. Most of the population is Roman Catholic.
