History and Culture

Aotearoa is the Maori name for New Zealnd and means "land of the long white cloud".

Polynesians arrived in New Zealand between 700 and 2000 years ago and their culture is very similar to the rest of Polynesia rather than nearest neighbour Australia.

In 1642 Dutch explorer Abel Tasman was the first European to see New Zealandbut it was not until Captain Cooks arrival in 1768 that the new land was mapped and explored by Europeans.

Britain eventually signed the treaty of Waitangi which gave Britain sovereignty and the Maoris their rghts. However the Maoris did lose land in the internal wars of the 1860s and 70s.

New Zealand was a loyal member of the Empire and Commonwealth and continues to be a magnet for British people seeking a new start.

The All blacks is feared name in the world of Rugby and NZ has a very strond sporting heritage in rugby, cricket, sailing and outdor pursuits.

Famous New Zelanders include  Rusell Crowe,Rachel Hunter,Sam Neil,Sir Edmund Hilary.
