Trekking the Paine Circuit in Patagonia Chile
Trekking the Paine Circuit in Patagonia Chile. This has to be one of the best treks in the world for awesome scenery. Patagonia lies in the far south of Chile, a land of glaciers, snowcapped pik granite peaks peaks, fjords and gauchos! The Paine circuit is a 10 day 100km trek through the Parque Nacional Torres del Paine. Although we have put this in the extreme category this is for the logistics required to pack all your gear round. Physically its mountainous terrain but not beyond a fit hiker. It is really windy though, the best time to go is the southern summer mid-november to mid february. There is a shorter 5 day hike called the "W" route.
To start you will need to fly into Punta Arenas, then take a 400km bus trip to the start of the trek at the Laguna Amarga park entrance. This allows you do the circuit in an anti-clockwise direction. The trek is low altitude with the highest point being 1241m, so no altitude problems like the Himalayas. Tyhe descent from the 4000ft high point of John Gardner Pass takes you to Grey Glacier camp where ice tumbles into a lake from the glacier.
Camping with a stove is a good way to gaurantee your own personal space ech night, althought there are huts. You can also take a supported trek with a guide so you don't have to pack all your own stuff.
